thoughts on keeping littles safe on masto (long)

@GreekYogurtSystem boosted cuz i'm curious what other people think, but having been around this instance for a little while it doesn't seem like there's anything official. but here are some things you may want to think about:

  • laws like COPPA (which you may have heard about on youtube) are meant to protect kids (and the data their activities generate) from (say,) google and the like. you may decide that plural cafe is a trusted webhost for your little's data, especially since you're also masking it with data from your older selves. on masto there's no algorithm to mess with what you see, and there's no ads so it doesn't seem like anybody's going to sell your little's information for profit; these features might also factor into whether a website feels like a safe place for a little one.
  • you might know that there are parts of mastodon that have some unkind folks, and you may want to take steps to let fewer internet meanies see the content your little posts. you may want to make sure she uses the post privacy setting that looks like a little padlock, so only people who follow your account can see the post. and you may want to go into your account settings and make it so you have to manually approve new followers, so random people can't just click the button and see everything immediately.
  • you might be interested in limiting your little's posted content in other ways - for example, you could use the drafts feature, so she can compose her posts but save them as a draft, and then when someone older takes over you can get a second look at it with more mature perspective, and hit post for her if it's all good. or if you decide to post selfies on your account, perhaps you decide not to post any pictures taken of the body while your little is driving, so the ways she expresses herself visually/bodily are still private.

every child is different, and your little might be comfortable with quite a bit of internet exposure. it's up to you to decide how vulnerable she'll be if she's on mastodon without an older co-consciousness to supervise her activity, and as the older ones it's your job to imagine the Worst Case Scenario and how you'd take care of her through it, so that she doesn't have to worry about that stuff. social media can be a scary place, but it can also be fun, and we hope you all have a great time here in plural cafe~! :plural_heart::chick_heart_nonbinary:

hate how civility discourse and respectability politics flatten every power dynamic so it seems logical to have takes like "you shouldn't be mean to a senator" when they're killing people with their policies

@wenotfreeyet ppl really out here thinking legal name is some actual concept rather than just more fucking oppressive bullshit

psa: your co-workers who have been there for longer and don't work as fast as you aren't ""lazy,"" they're exhausted. they were in your position once too, and felt like they had to put in all their energy ito the job -- and they burnt out. you should learn from them, and slow down now. take rest breaks and coffee breaks, let things take a little longer; your reward for extra speed will only ever be more assignments, inevitably grinding you down. your exploitative employer isn't worth it.
